RICHIE O'BRIEN
Richard O'Brien
came into this world on August 18th,1960 and he left it prematurely
on March 3rd 2010, just a few months short of his 50th birthday.
His death came as a huge shock to all who knew him. Richie was
a larger than life character who touched the hearts of many,
a fact that was emphasised by the large numbers that attended
his removal and funeral.
Richie was born
and reared in Prosperity Square off Barrack Street and he attended
Sullivans Quay and Deer Park Schools. He met Bernie Hayes, they
married in 1980 and set up home in Greenmount Buildings. Ten
years later Richie,Bernie and their boys, William, Barry and
Robert moved to Kent Road.
After leaving school
Richie worked for Thompson's Bakery and when it closed he set
up his own business. To early risers he was a familiar sight
around the southside of the city as he delivered bread and confectionary
to shops. He was a shrewd businessman and his youngest son ,
Robert , has made his own way in the trade and taken over the
family business.
Richie had many
interests but his passion was for the beautiful game. To say
he was a keen Arsenal fan would be an understatement, to which
many who tried to debate the merits or otherwise of the Gunners
will attest. Closer to home he was and will always be synonymous
with Cork's Everton AFC, a club born not far away from Richie's
own birthplace. During their time in Greenmount Buildings, Richie
and Bernie would sometimes frequent The Weigh House Bar in Barrack
Street, Everton's second home at the time and it was through
contact with David Duffy that Richie became involved with the
club.
He was actively
involved with the club for over 20 years and though not directly
involved with the teams in the last few years he was an Evertonian
man at heart and he was always there to help out when it came
to sponsorship, raising funds and generally supporting the club.
Most of his involvement with Everton was through the main committee
on which he served for many years but he was also actively involved
with various junior teams in the club.
One of his proudest
moments came when, as assistant to Tadgh Goggin, Richie helped
steer one the club's junior teams to league and President's
Cup success in 1990/91. On that team was his good friend Gerry
Stanton and the two would later link up to manage that team
in the AUL.
After that, Richie
went on to new pastures within the club, teaming up with another
good friend, Michael Mulcahy, to manage the club's Munster Senior
League junior team which went on to win the Carling Super Cup
in 1994/95 and the Junior Premier League the following season.
There was another change of management in the junior team when
Martin O'Regan took the helm, but Richie remained the constant
that kept a degree of continuity in the team. He and Martin
brought further success in the shape of a league and cup double
in 1999/2000 with a very young side. More cup success followed
the next season when Everton won the Junior League Cup.
Off the field Richie
had other sporting interests, notably don and darts, which he
played in The Weigh House. Like many of us who occupy a bar
stool on occasion, Richie had strong opinions, many of them
concerning Arsenal or Everton and he wasn't afraid to argue
them. Indeed, he was often so adamant about these opinions that
somewhere along the line, he became known as "The King".
We were never really sure if it was a title he bestowed upon
himself, but few would dispute the fact for fear of being put
in their place.
Sadly "The
King" is gone now but he will not be forgotten by the committee,
managers and players, past and present, of Everton AFC who owe
him a great deal for his service to the club. Richie is survived
by his mother Ena, his wife Bernie, sons William, Barry and
Robert, daughters-in-law and grandson Adam and his brothers
and sisters.
Long Live The
King.

Danny and Christopher O'Callaghan
on 8th May 2009
Everton
club history was created at the John Hayes Trophy Final
when for the first time in the club's history a father
and son were on an Everton trophy winning team. Danny
and Christopher O'Callaghan first appeared on a team together
in The Intermediate Cup Final in 1997. Everton were unlucky
to lose 1-0 and Christopher was the team's mascot. On
the 8th May 2009 after helping Everton United pick up
the John Hayes Trophy they received their winners medals
together and so created club history by being the first
father and son to do so. Congratulations to Danny and
Chris.....and to mark the historic occasion a special
award was made by the club to Danny & Chris. |
